A defense minister has stated that the MoD is currently investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese cars, and personnel have been advised to refrain from discussing classified matters in any cars.
Security Guidance for Defence Personnel
In a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD officials have been told not to talk about secret material while travelling in Chinese cars.
The minister said that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but noted that safety is a issue in every contemporary vehicles.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the growing threats of surveillance that are present in all vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”
Broader Security Background
The revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable China to switch off public transport and cause disruption to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
This broader defence situation underscores the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in all areas of government activities, from vehicle usage to communication habits.
